They are often held at key points in its evolution and serve, for example, to introduce new policies, invite countries to join the Alliance, launch major initiatives, and strengthen partnerships. Summits are meetings of the North Atlantic Council at its highest level, namely Heads of State and Government.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"439\" data-end=\"555\">Since 1949 there have been 34 NATO Summits.
