Defence Ministers Meeting, 10-11 February 2016

NATO Defence Ministers convened in Brussels on 10 and 11 February at the Alliance's Headquarters on the occasion of a very important Ministers Meeting in the run-up to the Warsaw Summit. The Italian Minister of Defence Roberta Pinotti and Ambassador Mariangela Zappia took part in the event.

The proceedings of the first day focused on NATO posture of deterrence and defence. Allies agreed to reinforce NATO presence in the East through the so-called enhanced forward presence. This will be a multinational, rotational force, supported by a programme of exercises. Furthermore, Ministers underscored the importance of strengthening cyber defence capabilities and providing a robust response to hybrid threats.

Defence Ministers also reviewed progress on NATO’s Joint Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance assets and discussed implementation of Readiness Action Plan.

The second day, in the framework of NATO-Georgia Commission, Defence Ministers welcomed the ambitious reforms taken forward by the country. Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg underlined that Georgia, thanks to its significant contributions to shared security, remains one of NATO closest Partners.

Lastly, Ministers agreed to launch a NATO mission in the Aegean aimed at stemming illegal migration, in close cooperation with EU border management agency, Frontex.

On the sidelines of the main event, a Counter-ISIL Coalition meeting also took place.
