On 15 December 2015, Ambassador Mariangela Zappia took part in the third conference on NATO topics hosted by the main US think tanks, with a view to providing guidance in time for the next Warsaw Summit (8-9 July 2016). The event was attended by the main experts in the field as well as NATO and US Government representatives, such as the Deputy Secretary of Defense Robert Work, the US Permanent Representative to NATO Doug Lute, General Louis Mercier, the Supreme Allied Commander Transformation (SACT), the NATO Deputy Assistant Secretary General for Political Affairs James Appathurai, and NATO Director of Policy Planning Fabrice Pothier.
In her speech, focused on emerging challenges and new NATO missions, Ambassador Zappia outlined the complex and variable framework of the challenges emanating from the South, and highlighted the Italian commitment as well as the need for a NATO comprehensive and flexible approach. Such an approach should give rise to a form of deterrence suitable to the entire spectrum of challenges of our century, which range from the fight against terrorism to the traditional military operations. Furthermore, Ambassador Zappia stressed the need to establish political perspectives aimed at solving current crises, with specific reference to Syria and Libya.
