On 7 and 8 September 2016, Ambassador Claudio Bisogniero went to Georgia together with the North Atlantic Council and NATO Secretary General.
During the visit, the Ambassadors had the opportunity to meet the most senior governement officials: the President of Georgia Giorgi Margvelashvili, the Prime Minister Giorgi Kvirikashvili, the Chairman of the Parliament David Usupashvili, as well as the Minister of Defence Levan Izoria and the Minister of Foreign Affairs Mikheil Janelidze. Furthermore, Permanent Representatives met with representatives of local media, NGOs and other international organizations operating in Georgia.
The event reconfirmed, following the decisions taken at the Warsaw Summit in July 2016, the importance of Georgia for the Atlantic Alliance as well as NATO’s closeness and solidarity to this country. The important contribution of Georgia to transatlantic and regional security was also acknowledged, as well as the value of the reform path underway, which should allow Georgia to gradually meet NATO standards. In addition, NAC mission in Georgia stressed once again the willingness to strengthen practical cooperation.
During the two-day visit in Tbilisi, Ambassador Bisogniero, together with his US, UK and German counterparts, took part, as a panelist, in the Tbilisi International Conference hosted by the McCain Institute for International Leadership, titled “Europe’s Changing Strategic Landscape after the Warsaw Summit”. Moreover, delegations and NATO Secretary General visited the Joint Training and Evaluation Centre (JTEC), to which Italy contributes 50,000 €, where they attended a demonstration of MEDEVAC (Medical Evacuation) capabilities by Georgian armed forces.
