EXTRAS: Italy leads a new project in the framework of NATO SPS Programme

On 14 June 2018, the inauguration meeting of the new NATO project, developed in the framework of the NATO Science for Peace and Security (SPS) Programme, took place in Rome. The project, jointly led by the Italian agency ENEA and by the Vinča Institute of Nuclear Science in Belgrade, with the cooperation of institutes from Germany (ICT Fraunhofer), the Netherlands (TNO), Italy (Agenzia del trasporto autoferrotranviario del Comune di Roma and Direzione Centrale Anticrimine della Polizia di Stato) and Ukraine (the National Technical University of Ukraine), aims at implementing a system capable of preventing terrorist attacks on public transports.

Italy confirms its role as one of the main supporters of the SPS Programme, having participated in around 30 initiatives since 2014.

The SPS Programme was established in 1958 as a follow-up of the report on non-military cooperation in NATO, also known as “The Report of the Committee of Three” (i.e. the Foreign Ministers of Italy, Gaetano Martino, Canada, Lester Pearson, and Norway, Halvard Lange). It is one of the main tools NATO has to promote scientific and technological cooperation among Allied and Partner nations and to project, through a unique network, the image of an organization committed to the security of the world, also through soft power tools.
